Preparatory Mathematical Methods
The Preparatory Mathematical Methods elective is aimed at students who have a keen interest in Mathematics and those who may be intending to study Mathematical Methods (CAS) and Specialist Mathematics in Years 11 and 12. This elective would be taken in addition to the compulsory mathematics unit.
This unit offers students the opportunity to explore new and challenging areas of mathematics, delivering additional content from levels 10 and 10A of the Victorian curriculum.
Students will be encouraged to develop their mathematical understanding and reasoning by explaining their thinking and justifying strategies used and conclusions reached. Where appropriate, students will make use of CAS technology.
Topics will be drawn from the following areas of study:
- Advanced Algebra
- Permutations and Combinations
- Sequences and Series
- Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
- Graphs of linear and non-linear functions
- Circle Geometry
Assessment:
To meet the course requirements and to demonstrate an adequate understanding of all topics for the unit, students need to complete a combination of skill development activities, investigation work, topic tests and homework tasks.
